About This Race
The Prairie Spirit Trail ultramarathon is a premier 'rails-to-trails' event in eastern Kansas that challenges runners with a fast, flat, and scenic out-and-back course between Ottawa and Iola. Favored by both first-timers and elite athletes for its 100-mile, 100K, 50-mile, and 50K distances, the race offers a rhythmic journey through tranquil rural landscapes and charming historic town centers.
What Makes It Unique
- Ultra-Fast Rail Trail: The course is exceptionally flat with minimal elevation change, following a former railroad bed composed of smooth, crushed limestone that is ideal for setting personal records.
- Custom Finisher Buckles for All Distances: Distinguishing itself from many other ultras, this race awards unique, custom-designed finisher buckles to all participants who complete an ultra-distance event, including the 50K and 50-mile races.
- Depot-to-Depot Aid Stations: Many aid stations are situated at historic train depots in small Kansas towns, providing a nostalgic atmosphere and excellent accessibility for support crews and family members.
